Goals and objectives

St. Basil Seminary is a center of learning and clerical formation. It enrolls students who wish to study for the priesthood in the Ukrainian Rite of the Catholic Church. The program helps the student mature as a well-educated person, committed to Christ and to the service of people. It is anticipated that, at the end of this process, the student will choose to serve his people as a priest.

The academic program corresponds to the aims of a four-year liberal arts college. It gives the student an awareness of traditional and contemporary thought in the liberal arts based on a philosophical and pre-theological core curriculum. It focuses on man’s place in the world, history, and culture. The program also emphasizes the skills and the moral principles that should govern personal and public affairs. Its most important ingredients are critical thinking, philosophical analysis, and cultural awareness. It also instills in the student a love for seeking, honoring, and defending the truth vigorously, along with an honest recognition of the limitations of human understanding.

The Seminary's community life reflects the influence of its goal, the priesthood, by accentuating spiritual, social, historical, and cultural development. It encourages the student’s desire to give true witness to the saving love of God in the world. It seeks to develop those values that are highly regarded among men and speak well of a minister of Christ, so that he may communicate effectively with others inside and outside the Seminary. As a result, the student grows in academic awareness, religious commitment, social responsibility, and cultural development.
